The Modern Work-Class ROV

Mark Collins, ROV Sales Manger, Soil Machine Dynamic Ltd

SMD Ltd designs and manufactures the largest range of subsea robotic systems for oil and gas, oceanographic, military telecom and mining use in the world. mark introduced the architecture of a modern work-class ROV, the reasons behind the design and the challenges faced moving into deep water. In addition, developments in ROV pilot aids, such as ROV dynamic positioning and the use of simulator technology for better spatial awareness was discussed.

 

The SERPENT Project: Oil, Gas and Biodiversity, Partnerships for Deepwater Science

Dr Ben Wigham, Lecturer in Marine Biology and Research Vessel Manager, Dove Marine Laboratory, Newcastle University

Collaborating closely with key players in the oil and gas industry, the 'Scientific and Environmental ROV Partnership Using Existing Industry Technology' (SERPENT) project aims to make access to cutting-edge, industrial ROV technology and data more accessible to the world's science community and increase the sharing knowledge between since and industry to progress deep-sea research. The programme interacts with science, industry and conservation groups globally to communicate the project to the public, increasing the awareness of our fragile marine resources.

 

The Subsea Future Talent Project

Dr Julia Race, Lecturer in Pipeline Engineering, Newcastle University, and David Martin, Applied Sciences, Newcastle College, Joint Project Managers

The presenters briefly described the aims of the project and the new courses in subsea engineering to be introduced this autumn.
