Overview

The Umbilical Manufacturers' Federation (UMF) decided to initiate a combined seminar/workshop on the subject of umbilical installation due to significant installation issues arising from time to time, and a consensus within the industry for such a workshop.

Installing umbilical systems subsea is comparable to installing power cables on land from a helicopter in the dark; it is therefore understandable that there have been issues when installing such products. With the move to deeper waters, longer tie-back distances and subsea production moving into increasingly hostile environments, it is likely that installation issues will continue to be a concern for the industry.

It is with this background that the UMF, in conjunction with the SUT, has embarked on the combined seminar/ work-shop with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the issues. With this understanding, the attendees at the event should then be able to develop a strategy as to the way forward, with the ultimate aim of reducing the occurrences of umbilical installation issues. The format was similar to that used for the very successful Umbilical Blockages Seminar/Workshop; this resulted in a joint industry project (JIP) that is well advanced in addressing blockage avoidance, not just umbilical control and chemical injection fluid conduits, but such conduits in the whole of a subsea production system.

The morning session was based on a series of high level presentations to highlight installation issues. These provided by companies representing the installation contractors, the umbilical manufacturers and, additionally, the hardware designers whose equipment is frequently provided as free issue equipment for attachment to umbilicals.

Each presentation was of relative short duration to allow more presentations in the available time, which provided a wider and more meaningful picture of the issues to be addressed. The aim of the presentations was for each presenter to provide a different aspect to avoid duplication and maximise the detail available for consideration by the working groups. In the afternoon session, the working groups reviewed the presentation content and other issues identified by the workshop participants and developed strategies for the way forward. Each group's strategies was then presented to the other groups, followed by an interactive discussion session with the aim of developing an overall strategy as to how best to use the output form the event to reduce the number of umbilical installation issues.

Speakers did not present formal papers, but provided keynote presentations. Aberdeen was chosen for the event, as it is where a large number of installation contractors are based and is well served by air travel.

The current chairman of the UMF introduced the event and provided a brief overview of the UMF activities. Additionally, a UMF member provided an overview presentation of the benefits of such events to the industry and how such an approach can be useful as a means of addressing other issues within the subsea production industry. The Umbilical Blockages Seminar/Workshop was used as an example and the progress made to date of the JIP that resulted form the event was highlighted.
