Sea Fever:
Marine Renewables ...
'The Call of the Running Tide'
8 November 2006 Aberdeen
Evening Meeting
Chairman Bill Edgar, EMEC and
Subsea Uk
Sponsored by Ross Deeptech Initiatives Ltd
Flyer

Wave and tidal stream energy (marine renewables)
have the potential for bulk electricity supply on a global scale. It
is currently estimated that between 15 and 20 percent of current UK
Electricity demand could be met by marine renewables. Some estimates
indicate capital expenditures to be deployed across Europe on wave
and tidal stream development could be as much as £5 billion up to
the year 2020.
This meeting provided an insight into the
interest that has gathered momentum over the recent years. It
presented an opportunity for underwater technology developers to
learn more about this arena, the technical priorities, some current
projects and the potential support, both financial and technical,
which is available for the development of marine renewables ... 'a
wild call and a clear call that not be denied'. (Thanks to the
poet John Masefield for the quotes.)
Presentations
Marine
Energy Accelerator
John Aldersey-Williams, Carbon Trust
John Aldersey-Williamstold the audience about the
Marine Energy Accelerator—a new initiative from the Carbon Trust which
will provide support for device technologies, component technologies and
installation and operations and maintenance research for marine
renewables.
Marine Energy
Neil Kermode, Managing Director
of EMEC, Stromness, Orkey
Neil Kermode provided his own view of the marine
renewable market and told the audience more about the facilities
available at EMEC for research into marine renewables.
TidEl: The TidEL Floating Free-Stream Tidel Turbine System
Ralph Manchester, Regional Manager of SMD
Hydrovision, Newcastle upon Tyne
This presentation shows the development of the
SMD Hydrovision TidEl system which is a floating free-stream tidal
turbine. It also includes aspects of the tidal resource in the UK;
why TidEl design is ideally suited to the resource; a history of the
development of TidEl so far; and factors affecting the future path
of the development.
